Devon Cole, MD, Fort Myers USAP Bio

I am an anesthesiologist and ICU specialist that focuses on patients with heart disease undergoing surgical procedures. I have specific interests in valvular disease and performing TEE-assisted procedures such as TAVR and MitraClip. I also provide pediatric and OB anesthesia as part of our practice group. In the OR and surgical ICUs, I care for high-risk cardiovascular, neurosurgical, and transplant patients.

I was raised on a farm in Idaho and like hiking and fishing. I enjoy spending time with my wife and three children. My early years entailed a lot of hard work on a fourth generation dairy farm, unlike Napoleon Dynamite filmed at my Idaho hometown (where our silos and sprinkled green fields are background to the final tether-ball scene). I spent many hours aside my father, learning from his experience and inspiration, altogether raising me up well. Benefitting from Brigham Young University scholarship, I earned undergraduate honors and completed a cancer research fellowship with Dr. Gregory Burton. His friendship enhanced my education and brought good times fly-fishing at West Yellowstone on Henry’s Fork. While at Medical College of Wisconsin and Anesthesiology Residency and Fellowships at University of Florida, time passed quickly and brought many patient successes. These experiences engendered a breadth of knowledge and compassion for the critically ill. My prior experiences also proved helpful to reduce hospital-acquired infections through eliminating organisms on high-touch surfaces.

Areas of clinical interest

I have interests in national quality programs and using EMR informatics to improve patient care.

I am amazed at the clarity of echocardiography to guide heart surgery and direct resuscitative efforts in the ICU, and have research interests in these areas.
