James Burkman, M.D.
I am a physician anesthesiologist with a wide breadth of practice including obstetric, ambulatory, thoracic, and regional anesthesia. I have been working at Swedish Medical Center since completing residency at the University of Washington where I remain active as a clinical instructor teaching residents on obstetric anesthesia rotations and medical students in the main operating room.
Since medical school, I've been active in organized medicine. Currently, I serve as a member of the board of directors of the Washington State Society of Anesthesiologists and was it's president in 2010 and 2011. I'm also a delegate to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the Washington State Medical Association. I like to stay involved in order to advocate for the health of our citizens and of our providers.
Areas of clinical interest
Malignant hyperthermia and muscle molecular biology are my areas of interest in research. I've published scientific articles in journals including Anesthesiology and Nature Medicine and presented at the ASA annual meeting and other conferences.
Seattle is my adopted home after growing up in Pennsylvania. I enjoy exploring the Pacific Northwest through hiking and cycling, keeping fit with triathlon and Crossfit, and creating functional artwork in woodworking and leatherworking.
